The value of the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award is equivalent to the applicant’s financial need. Financial need is derived from summing tuition, fees, and living costs, and subtracting the financial contribution the applicant can make each year. One’s standard needs assessment is based on the financial information provided by the applicant.
Renewal of the scholarship award can be done for up to three additional years of undergraduate study or to degree completion, provided the applicant achieves satisfactory academic standing in their faculty, continues to demonstrate financial need, and maintains the Canadian study permit (student visa) given to the international student.
Eligibility:
Consideration for the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award:
- Applicant must be an international student who will study in Canada on a Canadian study permit (student visa).
- Must be applying to the University of British Columbia from a recognized secondary school, or transferring from first year at a post-secondary college or other universities.
- Must have graduated from secondary school no earlier than June two years before the academic year one is applying for. For instance, applicants for 2024 must have graduated from high school no earlier than June 2022.
- Must be applying for a first undergraduate degree.
- Applicant must show excellent academic achievement (achieve all As or equivalent standards).
- Applicant must provide evidence of a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent you from pursuing a UBC degree.
- Applicant must meet the University of British Columbia’s admission requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and the English Language Admission Standard.

To apply for the International Scholars program, you must be nominated by your school or non-profit, and submit a reference from an academic referee. Confirm that your school or non-profit is eligible to nominate you. Both your nominator and academic referee should be informed that you are applying for the International Scholars Program.
Award application must be submitted and online application completed for admission to the University of British Columbia by 15 November. University of British Columbia English Language Admission Requirement must be met by 31 January.
