Canadian GovernmentPhD Degree
Deadline: before 1 November 2023 (annually)
Study in: Canada
Course starts: May/September 2024 (Annually)
Brief description:
To attract and keep top-tier doctoral students and to position Canada as a global hub of excellence in research and higher education, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) were established. The awards are for doctorate studies (or a combination of MA/PhD or MD/PhD degrees).
Host Institution(s):
Universities in Canada have Vanier CGS funding. The Vanier CGS is only valid at the Canadian institution that qualified for it and filed the nomination.
Level/Field(s) of study:
Ph.D. programs (or combined MA/Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D.) in health research; natural sciences and/or engineering research; and social sciences and/or humanities research
As a requirement for completion of the program, an eligible doctoral program must have a significant research component that results in the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that has been merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level.
If they feature a sizable autonomous research component, clinically focused programs of study, such as clinical psychology, as well as joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/Ph.D., DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) are also suitable programs.
Number of Scholarships:
Each year, up to 166 scholarships are given out.
Target Students:
Candidates for a Vanier CGS may be Canadian citizens, Canadian permanent residents, or foreign nationals.
Scholarship value/duration:
The scholarships are valued at $50,000 each year for three years.
Eligibility:
For Vanier CGS award considerations, one must:
- be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quota;
- A candidate must be enrolled in their first doctorate program, which includes a combination of undergraduate/graduate research programs like MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD if there is a clear and substantial research component. It should be noted that financing is only available for the PhD element of combined degrees.
- One must plan to undertake full-time doctoral (or dual graduate program, such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) study and research at the nominated institution in the summer semester or the academic year after the release of results; It should be noted that financing is only available for the PhD element of combined degrees.
- By May 1, 2023, a person must have finished no more than 20 months of PhD coursework.
- have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program, by 1 May 2023 if:
- the candidate was enrolled in a dual graduate program, such as an MD/PhD, MA/PhD, or DVM/PhD. Whether or whether they have previously been enrolled in a Master’s program, applicants who fit into this group are still eligible for the 32-month timeframe; or
- accelerated directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (no time spent in a Master’s program); or
- accelerated from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral program without obtaining the Master’s degree.
- One has completed the final two years of full-time study or its equivalent with a first-class average, as assessed by your institution. Candidates are urged to get in touch with the school to ask what constitutes a first-class average.
- To pursue or finish a doctorate, one must not now possess or have previously held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
Application instructions:
Candidates must be recommended by a Canadian institution with a quota at which they want to study. Direct applications to the Vanier CGS program are not accepted.
You can start an application in one of two ways. To begin the nomination procedure for the Vanier CGS program, either the student notifies the faculty of graduate studies at the chosen school of their intention to do so OR the institution contacts the intended candidate.
The student uses the ResearchNet application system to construct the application and submit it to the nominating institution by the internal deadline. The Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) is then forwarded the nominating institution’s suggested nominees by 1 November 2023 (or the preceding year).
